LONDON, UK – 22nd July 2013 – Base79, The International Network for Video Creators, Content Owners & Brands, today announces that Patrick Walker, Senior Director of Content Partnerships for YouTube is to join the company as Chief Content Officer. Base79 creates global audiences for video and is the largest YouTube partner outside North America.

Walker, who was Google’s first YouTube hire outside North America, launched the video sharing website throughout Europe, Middle East and Africa. He secured and managed a series of landmark deals for the platform, including the first broadcaster deal with the BBC, the first sports deal with the Beijing Olympics and the first catch-up TV deal with Channel 4. Most recently, Walker led the development of a new YouTube Music strategy in EMEA, signing break-through publishing deals with Universal Music Publishing and France’s Society of Authors Composers and Publishers of Music (SACEM). Patrick’s remit at Base79 will be to lead and focus the business’ rapid global growth though content partnerships, creative deal-making and global programming strategy.

The move comes hot on the heels of major investment from the likes of Peter Chernin and Creative Artist Agency’s Evolution Media Capital, with Base79 continuing to grow by more than 100% year-on-year since 2009. The appointment of such a prominent global online media executive, and another major hire for a multi-channel network, marks a watershed moment for the online video industry in EMEA.

Base79 generates over 650 million views per month across 800 channels on YouTube, making it the largest YouTube multi-channel network outside of North America. It has deals with more than 400 premium content partners including BBC Worldwide, Endemol’s Tiger Aspect, IMG Media, The Football Association, Ministry of Sound, Hat Trick Productions, Guinness World Records, as well as a number of leading YouTube content creators such as Remi Gaillard and ElRubius. Base79 runs original channels and were one of the leading partners in the YouTube Original Programming Initiative, securing five deals for channels such as www.youtube.com/flow.

Patrick Walker, chief content officer, Base79 comments: “The chance to join Base79, and be back in the fray helping build a fast-growth global business in a rapidly evolving unformed space, was too good an opportunity to resist. It’s also a chance to get back to my roots at the crossroads of content and technology, applying the skills I originally learnt as a TV producer and director with my most recent experience in the emerging world of multi-platform video distribution. My number one goal is to find new partners and help them, and our current clients succeed in a global, multi-device, multi-platform online video market. For Base79 right now the opportunities are practically unlimited, it’s really a question of where to place our bets next. Watch this space.”

Ashley MacKenzie founder and CEO, Base79 adds: “Attracting global talent of Patrick’s calibre should really send a powerful message about the bright future for MCNs like Base79. Just as we’ve seen the smart money from the US begin to be seriously invested in this space, the people are now starting to follow. Patrick’s blazed a trail wherever he’s gone, and his international ambitions match our own. The connections, skills and experience Patrick brings will help us continue to lead the market outside North America, building audiences, driving sustainable revenue and creating the next generation of world class online video content.”
